BELT SHIELD - RUBBER CONVEYOR BELT REPAIR
POLYUREAS
Conveyor belt repairs require different polyurea’s for different applications. They normally require any or all of; low cost, high abrasion resistance, fire resistance and high chemical resistance. The BeltShield system has a solution to suit all your requirements.
Why Polyurea?
Polyurea is one of the younger technologies in the heavy-duty coating industries, even though the basic chemistry was developed more than 40 years ago. Since the initial development, the combination of extremely fast return to service times, high flexibility, tensile strength, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance and impact resistance have led to it gaining favour in the waterproofing, waste water treatment, mineral processing, pulp & paper, power generation, marine, material handling and general construction industries, just to name a few.
When it comes to replacing or repairing rubber, polyurea has an excellent history, commonly outlasting traditional rubber linings by many times. For conveyor belt repairs, we recognised the ability of the polyurea to perform more than 10 years ago, but the trick was the primer technology and market appetite was not there. Fast forward to now and the combination of financial drivers (cost saving and minimising down-time production losses) and our new primer technology, and many tests of different products to determine what the key requirements for the polyurea area, have meant that ShieldPoly polyurea’s are now taking their place as preferred products for conveyor belt repair.
Our Range
Our range of polyurea’s have been selected to cover the most common conveyor belt repair requirements, as well as meeting the physical property requirements to work when subjected to the forces on partially cured product applied to a running belt, as well as the forces involved during full service.
Note: Many industries think of hardness as a measure of abrasion resistance, and for some applications there is a correlation. For material handling and particle wear of thick elastomeric coatings, hardness does not give a good correlation. Instead for these products, maximising tensile strength, elongation and Taber abrasion resistance appears to give the best indication of performance.
Our range consists of pure polyurea’s unless noted otherwise. The benefit of a pure polyurea is that it is not adversely affected by humidity during application, because the two part product reacts quicker with itself than it does with water. Polyurethane is the opposite.
Our global manufacturing network means that not only do you have access to the best products in the world, but continuity of supply is maximised.

SHIELD POLY CV
This is our general-purpose conveyor belt repair polyurea. It has excellent tensile, elongation and abrasion resistance. It has good gel time to give a balance between minimising sag when applied to inclined surfaces, and penetration into all areas of gouged sections. Critically, it has excellent caking properties that prevent it from going through the brittle phase that some polyurea’s go through during curing. This prevents cracking of the polyurea during curing.
Tensile Strength, MPa (ASTM D638) | 17-21 MPa |
Elongation, ASTM D638 | 400-500% |
Taber Abrasion resistance, mg weight loss (1000g, 1000rev, H-181 wheel), ASTM D4060 | 80-100 |
It is chemically resistant to most common products carried on conveyor belts.
SHIELD POLY AR
This is our high abrasion resistant conveyor belt repair polyurea. It has excellent tensile, elongation but particularly abrasion resistance. It has improved shrinkage characteristics compared with most high abrasion resistant polyurea’s. Unlike other high abrasion resistant polyurea’s, it is also 100% pure polyurea, rather than a hybrid polyurethane. It is chemically resistant to most common products carried on conveyor belts.
Tensile Strength, MPa (ASTM D638) | 17-21 MPa |
Elongation, ASTM D638 | 400-500% |
Taber Abrasion resistance, mg weight loss (1000g, 1000rev, H-181 wheel), ASTM D4060 | 80-100 |
1 H-18 wheel is considerably more aggressive than the CS-17 wheel that is commonly used for polyurea abrasion testing.
SHIELD POLY CV FR
This is our fire resistant conveyor belt repair polyurea. It has excellent tensile, elongation and abrasion resistance as well as Class 1 fire resistance to ASTM E84. Unlike other fire resistant polyurea’s, it is also 100% pure polyurea, rather than a hybrid polyurethane.
Tensile Strength, MPa (ASTM D638) | 8-12 MPa |
Elongation, ASTM D638 | 300-350% |
Taber Abrasion resistance, mg weight loss (1000g, 1000rev, H-181 wheel), ASTM D4060 | 60-100 |
It is chemically resistant to most common products carried on conveyor belts.
SHIELD POLY HC
